Linux – How to unzip file which has been zipped on Microsoft Windows

I receive ZIP files which has been zipped on Windows machine often. If the zipped file contains only US characters, everything works well, but files with some special characters like “ěščřžýáíéú..” are corrupted.

There is solution how can you unzip file without corrupted encoding in file names.

  1. Save ZIP file somewhere on your disc
  2. Run terminal and go to the folder which contains the ZIP file
  3. Unzip file
    unzip -O CP852

Note: Replace “CP852” with charset which is usually used on Windows machines in your country. “CP852” is charset for Czech Republic.
