Ubuntu 14.10 64-bit (Utopic Unicorn) personal guide

Guide how to install the most widely used applications for Ubuntu 13.10.

Repositories management

Run “Software & Updates” application from Ubuntu menu and select “Canonical partners” repository from list on “Other software” tab.


Repository cache update

Do repository cache update by command:

sudo apt-get update

System upgrade

You should keep you OS up to date. You can do it by “Update Manager” tool which is in system tray or you can use command:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade


System enhancements

Enable system tray icons

  1. Run terminal
  2. Add repository with patch
    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:gurqn/systray-utopic
  3. Update repositories info
    sudo apt-get update
  4. Apply patch
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  5. Restart computer


Launcher menu editor

sudo apt-get install menulibre


Disable the shopping suggestions

Open “Security & Privacy” application and disable “Include online search results” on “Search” tab.



Unity tweak tool

Unity Tweak Tool is a settings manager for the Unity desktop. It provides users with a fast, simple and easy-to-use interface with which to access many useful and little known features and settings of the desktop environment that one may want to configure.


 sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool


TrueType Fonts

Microsoft’s TrueType fonts

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

Add repository for Oracle JAVA by commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer oracle-java8-set-default

You can uninstall OpenJDK from your system now.

sudo apt-get remove --purge openjdk-* icedtea-*

Let’s check current java version

java -version

we should see message like this

java version "1.8.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b17)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode)

NFS Client

Network File System (NFS) is a distributed file system protocol originally developed by Sun Microsystems in 1984, allowing a user on a client computer to access files over a network in a manner similar to how local storage is accessed.

sudo apt-get install nfs-common

– One time mount
– Run this command (don’t forgot modify ip, folder, etc…)

sudo mount /media/nfs-shared/

– Auto-Mount on start

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

– Put line below to the end of fstab file (don’t forgot modify ip, folder, etc…) /media/nfs-shared nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr      0       0

HP printer and fax

Install required packages

sudo apt-get install hplip-data python-qt4 hplip-gui

Restart cups server

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

Run Hp setup wizard

sudo hp-setup

Follow installation wizard

PDF printer

This software is designed to produce PDF files in a heterogeneous network by providing a PDF printer on the central fileserver.

sudo apt-get install cups-pdf

– Restart cups server

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

– Printed PDFs are stored in “your_home_folder/PDF”

Compression/Decompression tools

You can compress and decompress 7z, zip, gzip, rar, xz, tar, bz2, xar, tar.gz, tar.bz, and many others.

sudo apt-get install p7zip-rar p7zip-full unace unrar zip unzip sharutils rar uudeview mpack arj cabextract



Google Chrome


Add repository for Google Chrome by commands:

sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list'
wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update

Install package google-chrome-stable

sudo apt-get install google-chrome-stable

File managers

MC – midnight commander

If you use terminal and you like twin-panel file managers, you should install Midnight Commander.

sudo apt-get install mc

Krusader file manager

Krusader is an advanced twin panel (commander style) file manager for KDE and other desktops in the *nix world, similar to Midnight or Total Commander. It provides all the file management features you could possibly want.

sudo apt-get install krusader krename p7zip-full rar unrar arj unace rpm md5deep cfv kompare kdiff3 p7zip okteta p7zip-rar alien krename lzma konqueror

sudo apt-get install skype



Free open-source disk encryption software.
Go to the http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads
Select “Standard 64bit” in “Linux” combobox and click download
Go to the folder where is truecrypt downloaded by cd command
Unpack downloaded tar by:

tar xvzf truecrypt-7.1a-linux-x64.tar.gz

Run extracted installer by:

sudo sh truecrypt-7.1a-setup-x64

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

Install codecs by command

Dropbox is the easiest way to share and store your files online.

Then run Dropbox application and finish setup.


Google Drive client for GNU/Linux

It automatically synchronizes your local copy of your Google Drive, adding or removing files from the online storage. It allows add new files on your local directory and them will be uploaded to Google Drive when it synchronizes.

Add repository

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:thefanclub/grive-tools

Install package grive-tools by command

sudo apt-get install grive-tools


  1. Run application”GRive Setup” from your launcher
  2. Click Next
  3. GRive Tool opens new browser window with google login dialog
  4. Login and click “Accept” button in your browser
  5. Copy and paste code from the browser to the GRive dialog window
  6. Click Next button
  7. GRive starts initial synchronization
  8. Wait until synchronization is not successfully finished

Haroopad is a markdown enabled document processor for creating web-friendly documents.

  1. Download “Linux Debian Package (64bit)” from web http://pad.haroopress.com/user.html
  2. Install DEB by Software Centre (double-click on downloaded DEB package)



A free, platform independent, unicode LaTeX editor with inline spell checking, codefolding and syntax highlighting. A fork of Texmaker.

  1. Open terminal and run command
    sudo apt-get install texstudio texstudio-doc texstudio-l10n texlive texlive-base
  2. Install your language pack (in my case English and Czech)
    sudo apt-get install texlive-lang-english texlive-lang-czechslovak



KDE apps native look

If you use any KDE application like Krusader, kMyMoney, etc. maybe you would like to have all application with the same look.

Install systemsettings package

sudo apt-get install systemsettings

then run “KDE system settings” application

Select “Application Apperance” from menu


On the “Style” tab, under “Widget style” select “GTK+”


Download file “KDE_Ambiance.colors” and import it by button “Import Scheme” on tab “Colors”


On the “Icons” tab, select “Humanity”


On the “Fonts” tab, replace all fonts by Ubuntu 11 except Monospace font, this font replace by font “Ubuntu Mono 13”


on the same tab set “Enabled” under “Use anti-aliasing”

then click “Configure” button and check “Use sub-pixel rendering” and for “Hinting style”, select “Slight”
