Backup your current source.list file

sudo cp -p /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup

Edit sources.list

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Uncoment Canonical’s ‘partner’ and ‘backports’ repository like this

## Uncomment the following two lines to add software from the 'backports'
## repository.
## N.B. software from this repository may not have been tested as
## extensively as that contained in the main release, although it includes
## newer versions of some applications which may provide useful features.
## Also, please note that software in backports WILL NOT receive any review
## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
deb http://cz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-backports main restricted universe multiverse

Add these lines to the end of the sources.list file

Run these commands in terminal to adding next axtra repositories:**

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:conkyhardcore/ppa
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:globalmenu-team/ppa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:doctormo/ppa
Install GPG-keys of added repositories by these commands:

Repository info update

sudo aptitude update

System update

sudo aptitude full-upgrade

Software installation

MC – midnight commander

sudo aptitude install mc


sudo aptitude install thunderbird thunderbird-gnome-support thunderbird-locale-cs


sudo aptitude install acroread acroread-fonts


sudo aptitude install skype

Flash plugin

sudo aptitude install flashplugin-installer

TrueType Fonts

sudo aptitude install msttcorefonts

Codecs (DVD, video, audio, …)

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse libxine1-ffmpeg libdvdcss2 libavcodec-unstripped-52 libdvdread4 libmp3lame0


You can install JRE or JDK.
JRE – great choice if you want only run Java applications

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-plugin

JDK – for Java developers

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-demo

VMWare Player

Download VMWarePlayer from www.vmware.com

sudo aptitude install kernel-headers binutils make gcc
sudo sh VMware-Player-3.0.1-227600.x86_64.bundle


sudo apt-get install virtualbox-3.1 dkms

Gnome themes and icons

sudo aptitude install gnome-themes gnome-themes-extras gnome-themes-ubuntu gnome-themes-selected gnome-themes-more gnome-colors


sudo aptitude install homebank


- Download instllation file from http://www.netbeans.org/downloads/index.html

cd /Folder/Where/Is/Downloaded/NetBeans/Installation/File

sudo sh netbeans-6.7.1-ml-linux.sh


sudo aptitude install rapidsvn


sudo apt-get install conky conkyforecast

e.g. you can run thunderbird minimized in tray by command: alltray thunderbird


Go to the http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads
Select “Standard 64bit” in “Linux” combobox and click download
Go to the folder where is truecrypt downloaded by cd command
Unpack downloaded tar by:

tar xvzf truecrypt-6.3a-linux-x64.tar.gz

Run extracted installer by:

sudo sh truecrypt-6.3a-setup-x64

Follow installation wizard


sudo aptitude install keepassx

NFS Client

sudo aptitude install nfs-client

- One time mount
- Run this command (don’t forgot modify ip, folder, etc…)

sudo mount /media/nfs-shared/

- Auto-Mount on start

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

- Put line below to the end of fstab file (don’t forgot modify ip, folder, etc…) /media/nfs-shared nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr      0       0

yEd Graph Editor

Download linux installer from URL: http://www.yworks.com/en/products_yed_download.html
Got to the folder where is file downloaded (by cd command)
Run installer:

sudo sh yEd-

Follow installer wizard (I changed installation path from “/opt/yEd” to “/usr/local/yEd”)

HP printer and fax

Install required packages

sudo aptitude install hplip-cups python-qt4 hplip-gui

Restart cups server

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

Run Hp setup wizard

sudo hp-setup

Follow installation wizard

PDF printer

sudo aptitude install cups-pdf

- Restart cups server

sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart

- Printed PDFs are stored in “your_home_folder/PDF”

Ubuntu Tweak

sudo aptitude install ubuntu-tweak

Nautilus addons

sudo aptitude install nautilus-open-terminal nautilus-filename-repairer nautilus-image-converter nautilus-script-audio-convert nautilus-script-collection-svn diff-ext

GnoMenu – advanced gnome menu

sudo aptitude install gnomenu

Google Earth
