Asus N53SV and Ubuntu 13.10 64bit (Saucy Salamander)

Guide how to solve some problems if you install Ubuntu 13.10 64bit on Asus N53SV notebook.

Hybrid Graphics card Intel/nVidia optimus

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus linux-headers-generic primus-libs-ia32

restart your computer

Set brightness to minimum on startup

Edit configuration file “/etc/rc.local” eg. by command

sudo gedit /etc/rc.local

and add following before the last line

echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video1/brightness

restart your computer

Enable NumLock on X server starup

Install numlockx package

sudo apt-get install numlockx

Edit configuration file “/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-unity-greeter.conf” eg. by command

sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-unity-greeter.conf

and add following at the last line

greeter-setup-script=/usr/bin/numlockx on

restart your computer

Enabling NumLock for Virtual Consoles (TTYs)

Edit configuration file “/etc/rc.local” eg. by command

sudo gedit /etc/rc.local

and add following before the last line

# Turn Numlock on for the TTYs:
for tty in /dev/tty[1-6]; do
    /usr/bin/setleds -D +num < $tty
done

restart your computer

Enable hibernation

Create configuration file “/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla” eg. by command

sudo gedit /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

Copy and paste below lines into the file and save it

[Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
ResultActive=yes

[Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
ResultActive=yes

restart your computer

 Disable guest account

Edit configuration file “/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-unity-greeter.conf” eg. by command

sudo gedit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-unity-greeter.conf

add below line into the file and click save

allow-guest=false

restart your computer

CpuFreq indicator and switcher

Install indicator-cpufreq package

sudo apt-get install indicator-cpufreq

Press keys “ALT+F2” and write command

indicator-cpufreq

Indicator will start each time when you login from now. You can select cpu-freq mode in indicator context menu.
